The Southwest Institute for Research on Women [SIROW] was founded in 1979 as a regional research and resource institute in the University of Arizona’s College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. SIROW is dedicated to improving the well-being of women and girls, their families, and the communities in which they live.
The research internships are a component of Let’s Measure Better project, which seeks to address homelessness & housing insecurity data gaps in Tucson/Pima County. The homelessness service sector in Tucson is currently undergoing extensive reform efforts to improve the responsiveness, quality, and efficacy of our local homelessness prevention and mitigation services. SIROW staff and faculty are working in support of these reform efforts and there is an enormous amount of work to do!
There is enormous variety in the work that students may engage in, so there are many opportunities to find a good fit for individual student interests and skills. These different types of work include: literature reviews of best practices/effective programs, working in administrative support of committees charged with program/system reform, assisting in the development of resource guides and materials, translation of materials, and (for those with the appropriate skills) lots of opportunities for lower-level data analysis and visualization work.
This is an incredible opportunity for students to gain real-world exposure to applied system change/redesign work, and a grounded sense of the skills needed to navigate changes to local institutions and practices.
