Internship Summary:

Dr. Brandon T. McDaniel—a leading scholar on parent device use, technoference in family relationships, and the intersection of technology use in family life—is looking for self-motivated and engaged students to work directly with him on research related to the impacts of technology use on parents, families, and children.

Seeking students who are:

  • Interested in tech use in families/relationships/parents/children
  • Self-motivated, responsible, and dedicated to careful work
  • Able to work effectively in virtual capacity
  • In addition, not required but a plus: experience with data analysis, journal article writing, etc.
  • Must be an undergraduate/graduate student (i.e., cannot graduate before December 1, 2024).

Internship Tasks:

Depending on the skill level and knowledge of the intern, the internship might entail:

  • Daily tracking of research participants / recruitment of participants / daily research study tasks
  • Data cleaning / data analysis
  • Journal article preparation/dissemination of study results (e.g., centered around parent phone use, etc.)

Everyday Mother-Baby Relations and Cellphone Engagement (EMBRACE)

In this grant-funded study, we examine mother phone use around their infants utilizing real-time device tracking (via an app installed on their smartphone), daily survey bursts, and remote video observations of mother-infant feedings across months 2, 3, 4, and 5. We seek to understand whether mother phone use impacts mothers’ feelings and infant behavior from one moment to the next as well as whether effects matter for long-term infant development across months. Your work with us would contribute valuable and foundational knowledge toward these goals.
